Earlier this week, California State Senator Jerry McNerney (D-5) took time to visit Western Tree Nut Association member Travaille & Phippin, Inc. (T&P). With the almond-processing season in full swing, there is no better time to bring elected officials out to the farm or to your facilities than now. David Phippen, Owner and Manager of T&P, took the opportunity to show the Senator the range of almond quality, effectiveness of hand and mechanical sorting, as well as highlighted fumigation as a critical tool from field to export container. Senator McNerney also heard from WTNA President/CEO Roger Isom on several regulations in front of CalOSHA, and Assistant Vice President of Technical Services Chris McGlothlin on the importance of developing credible biomass solutions impacting California agriculture. Senator McNerney has been a friend to agriculture in his time at the State Capitol by authoring SB 297 earlier this year. The legislation gave increased allowances for on-farm composting from 1,000 cubic feet to 5,000 cubic feet without having to go through the significant permitting requirements levied by three separate regulatory agencies. We would like to thank Senator McNerney for taking the time out of his schedule to meet with WTNA and its members.
